This was the very first Ozric release I ever tried (along with Jurassic Shift that I bought the very same day at the very same record store). This was in 1997, I only heard of the band for about a year, and I'm ever glad I bought Arborescence. Of course the artwork drew me in as well. This one is more guitar-dominated than Jurassic Shift, perhaps a bit less electronic, but it's very much a must have album. You get rockers like "Astro Cortex" to the ambient title track. "Al-Salooq", given its name, shows a Middle Eastern influence, while "Dance of the Loomi" has a more techno feel. "Shima Koto" attempts a bit of that Japanese influence. This was the Ozrics last release with Joie and Merv (aside from Sunrise Festival from 2008, but that was just a one-off reunion, by which Zia and John were long gone, and Ed's American wife Brandi, was now handling bass). They decided to concentrate full-time with Eat Static (a techno outfit that might not appeal to the prog rock audience).
I have seen many reviews think this was a disappointing followup to Jurassic Shift, but I can't agree on that. I was totally blown away and sold on the band thanks to this CD (as well as Jurassic Shift, since it was bought the same day). You got to start somewhere, and I'm glad I started here. -
Edited 19 years agoOne of the all time great Ozric albums. I believe this was the last album with Joie and Merv. They left afterwords to concentrate on their side project Eat Static.
Yog-Bar-Og has to be one of my all time favorite Ozric tracks and a great example of how the band can blend different musical ages together seamlessly. The title track is a beautiful ambient piece. If you like it I highly recommend the Spacelines album Ed, Joie and Merv recorded as Nodens Ictus.
Dance of the Loomi is a nice programmed piece with guitar played over it. Very smooth. Astro Cortex and Myriapod provide plenty of guitar driven adrenalin. Lots of memorable basslines from Zia on this one. Especially on There's a Planet Here.
A great balance of live band work and programmed tracks. Recommended album for people getting into or testing out the Ozric's.
