And again a really bad pressing, released by Deutsche Grammophon. Far too much surface noise for this beautiful music.
DG already failed with the pressings of "The Wind" by Balmorhea, "Playground In A Lake" by Clark, "The Turning Year" by Roger Eno, "Inner Symphonies" (red vinyl) by Hania Rani & Dobrawa Czocher, "Reflections" (clear vinyl) by Víkingur Ólafsson, "Philip Glass: Piano Works" by Víkingur Ólafsson and "Biala Flaga" by Hania Rani & Dobrawa Czocher".
Where's the quality control? -
Sadly I wasn't lucky with this album...
There are many cracks and pops on it. More than it should usually be. But the worst thing! Side B Track 3 has a damage so the needle jumps and you have to manually lift the needle and move it for a few millimeters. Hope the Seller can send me a new one or something else.
The Music is touching and very good. -
Even if some reviews show restraint and sometimes slight disapproval I love this album. The best song indeed is „The Lonely Night“ ft. Mark Lanegan and Kris Kristofferson. Both voices are somewhat fragile and in extreme contrast to the clean and soft sounding orchestra. Sound quality is above average, this album is a „no-brainer“ in my opinion!

Edited 2 years agoVery quiet pressing but doesn't seem to have enough separation in the mix during some of louder tracks. The Lonely Night however is great, clarity of the vocals are fantastic.

The new versions are really good if you like the philharmonic versions. The pressing is near to perfect. My copy came clean, has only a few light clicks but no surface noises at all. The mix is I guess similar to all classical LPs, quiet when the music is quiet and louder well when the music is getting louder ;-). The volume is in general a little low but nothing critical, the sound is clear, at least as clear as the songs on spotify. It's still overall very good but the mix could have been better I agree.

My mam, who ranks Moby's "Play" lp amongst her top ten albums of all times, really cannot get into this album. And in fact, as she is repeatedly saying to me, the grey vinyl is emblematic of the contents of the album - that is, the music is quite dull, grey and pedestrian to her and that perhaps, in the future, Moby should try harder to make an album that is more day-glo yellow, or pink, or even better, just like Play again!!

First of all it came with an above average amount of dirt on the vinyl. The sleeves are ok but not lined. I was hoping this release would be something special, however I was left fairly deflated.
Like others have said the vinyl version sounds somewhat quiet and compressed. I was actually worried something in my system was starting to play up. Nope just this record. It really did feel like the sound was being choked by something.
It does come more alive when you crank up the volume but so does the surface noise. The surface is fairly quiet you just really have to turn it up that much, it's really weird.
It's a really really big shame, if this was done properly it could of been the type of record you get out to test your system.
My System:
Nagaoka MP-500
Technics SL-1210GR
Yamaha AS1200
KEF R7

Listened to this now a couple of times, and the pressing does lack vibrancy. But more noticeable I thought, were that some of the vocals are just awful.
