SIGN is truly magnificent. Whereas the previous 'NTS Sessions' box set was very forward looking and progressive, SIGN very much references the past. The music itself sounds (to my mind) very much like 'Oversteps' from 2010, whilst the cover art uses the very same geometric shape that was employed on the posters and merch of Autechre's 2016 European tour. However, whereas the 2016 tour artwork saw 2 copies of the geometric shape mirrored against each other, the cover art for SIGN sees several copies of the same shape eclipsing each other. This would suggest to me, a shortness of time, a small and very special moment when an eclipse occurs. This would perhaps underline the album's concise shortness in comparison to Autechre's previous few releases.
I when The Clash released their mammoth triple LP 'Sandinista!' in 1980 and how disappointing their next album 'Combat Rock', a bare single LP, seemed by comparison. I was almost expecting the same disappointment with a single CD from Autechre after it's mammoth-sized predecessor, but amazingly, I find a single CD from Autechre very concise, very well tracked (as a regular pop or rock album would be) and very easy to consume. 'NTS' may have pushed expectations to new levels, but Autechre have followed it up with a micro-sized triumph. An eclipse indeed!
