Edited 5 years agoThe problem is not the LP pressing. I have both LP and CD versions and they sound the same garbage. The problem is mastering: insane levels of dynamic compression. These modern studio gurus ing a signal through 100 DSP tasks in a minute should be sent to jail (to be polite). The problem is that I wonder how a musician (in this case Michael Kiwanuka) can let the producer to do such a shame. Do they have two ears like me and the rest of the humans? I suspect they listen to the final masters sitting in the car with their iphone while doing some other distracting activities, this is the only explanation I have.

Got to add my voice to the chorus of disapproval on the pressing here. I'm just listening to my second copy - this time the black vinyl, after swapping the yellow for it - and while it's significantly better than the previous copy, there's crackle and distortion during ages of vocal all across both sides of the first disc. Not as bad as the yellow one, but inescapable and intrusive and a real pity. I only got my act together to return the yellow vinyl version today because I've loaned my CD copy to a friend and had to turn to the vinyl to hear it today, but I don't think I'm going to get through it. A huge pity, because the music and the production are absolutely first rate - one of the best albums of the century. There really is no excuse, particularly when the price for vinyl copies now is so high.

Interestingly, this CD version comes with Japanese song titles / information when opening the album with the Windows Media Player.

Muffled sound and sibilance, but pressing is excellent - no clicks and pops. Retro-style sound is not my taste, it's annoying to hear it on a good system...
