Douglas P. tried to keep up with the times, sowing Trump-era memes in a personal/confessional album on the lines of ‘The Rule of Thirds’ or ‘Peaceful Snow’.
Going through the motions, however...sounds like he’s content to drink.
One glaring exception, though: ‘What Will Become Of Us?’.
A genuinely good song, one of his best in fact, it poses a question that has been obsessing me also of late: WHAT WILL BECOME OF US? -
'The Humble Brag' is my standout track. Speaks to me of our current era's social maladies quite clearly...

This album is Douglas’ most personal, and least political / social. It has some very good melodies. I recommend it if you have an open mind. My favorite tracks: God A Pale Curse, Going Dark, Pole Star of Eden.

Edited 6 years agoA scatter bunch of burntout platitudes.
"Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed and unable to meet constant demands. As the stress continues, you begin to lose the interest or motivation that led you to take on a certain role in the first place."
That's the "essence" from this álbum. -
Edited 6 years agoIt is so odd to see some of the negative reviews for this album. In my opinion, if you don't like this album then you just don't like or understand Death in June. I can even agree that a couple of more recent albums might have been a little dry and uneventful. However, I thought Essence is the perfect name for this album because it had many glimpses and reflections of the earlier styles of DIJ. The opening was briefly reminiscent of something you might hear on Wall of Sacrifice. My Florida Dawn also has a psychotic All Pigs Must Die feel to it. A couple of songs even had a deep Heaven Street sort of grittiness to them. I noticed a few mastering innovations with some interesting bass and orchestral accompaniments. There is chaotic electric guitar that rumbles in the background like a thunderstorm while glorius accoustic guitar chords rain down; Dreamy piano notes and bells at just the right locations; and deep, dark lyics and layers of vocal echoes that have Douglas Pearce's trademarks of elegance and poetry. All were very nice tunes with everything you would expect from DIJ. Douglas Pearce still has the golden touch, as he remains a masterful, prolific songwriter. Five stars!

Alas, previous albums were already not so good and had more to do with speculation than music. Yet the same shit again. Douglas took all the great elements from his classic works of 90s and managed to made the most boring album out of it.

Is it really that difficult to release a new Di6 record? Only possibility to order is from the US or at horrible shipping rates. Wtf?

I was quite enchanted by the previous albums despite the repetitive style... now I find this new one quite disappointing. Sounds weel too much of "réchauffé !...
