"Too Much" seems to be one of the last of the great early Elvis songs. "Too Much" is a real rocker with knowing lyrics ("like to hear you sighing even though I know you're lying...")
The guitar break is really interesting rock/rockabilly.
I haven't even listened to "Playing For Keeps" as I suspect it is your typical Presley ballad.
Elvis would enter the army, and to my ear, he never reasserts his volatile rock and roll presence until his early sixties' "Little Sister". Elvis continued to record some great pop music throughout his career, but it is either feast ("In the Ghetto", "Suspicious Minds") or famine ("U.S. Male", "Return to Sender"). I especially find "Return to Sender" and its dorkiness irksome, as it seemed to seal the deal on Elvis' utter castration.
Not to mention a wealth of forgettable movie soundtrack tunes.
But "Too Much" still rocks fine and there's danger in that guitar.
