Instrumental featuring fake jollity & forced jaunty perky piano w/ cascading notes that sound like a rolling roulette wheel (maybe?) & lightly strummed guitar as accompaniment. Mr. Russ Conway tinkles away on his (high key) piano, and… that’s about it - as if he’s still searching for a tune that never quite seems to materialise. The melody plods along pleasantly (well… irritatingly) without going anywhere very far & then it ends, in under two minutes.”
It actually spent a two weeks at the top of the charts from 19th June – 3rd July 1959. The question is… why? Maybe because grannies across the land liked it & probably thought he looked like a nice boy? In fact, for a ‘nice boy’ Conway led a fairly troubled life. Alcoholism, crippling self-doubt, a reliance on anti-depressants, an eighty (80!) a day cigarette habit – all of which can probably be attributed to his being gay but having to keep it hidden for fear of losing everything.
The guy(s) at fiftiesnumberones.blogspot.com said “it sounds like an ice cream van plying its trade around the dusk tinged streets of a council estate on a late October evening… in the rain.”
That aside - YOU NEED THIS RECORD!
