Edited 5 years agoTwo discs /CD captures an amazing event , pieced together from July , 1971 shows at the legendary venue .
The audience is absolutely spent at midpoint as JB grinds and groans and shrieks and moans with real sexual intent - this is really not for grandma and the grandkids on Sunday .
Add a terrible mix which pushes back the classic assemblage of musical idols .
Best tracks are “it’s a new day “, “escapism / make it funky “( really just “escapism “), “give it up or turnit a Loose “ and “call me super bad”.
Yes, a highly sampled album and an historic entry , but occasional YouTube plays of my recommendations should be sufficient .
Want a better live jb album ? Try “live in Dallas “ or go back to the beginning for “Apollo , vol. one”. -
Thats right I love this record, Escape-ism into make it funky "she be coming round the mountain". You cant beat Mr Brown live, I have been collecting Brown for years and his live stuff still makes me get down unbelievable. Still not my favorite James brown it has to be.
My part / make it funky part 3 the funkiest track ever made!!! the horns vs vocals who wins you will have to listen to find out!!!
I just love the live funk he brings. -
Three weeks into a new international deal with Polydor Records, a new studio album under their belt and various singles chasing each other up the charts, James Brown and his JB's recorded several live shows at New York's Apollo Theater. The resulting album, Brown sixth live LP in eight years, still produces the shivers. The long and hypnotic "Escape-ism" / "Make It Funky" vamp was only played once, opening the first show of the first night. Like Danny Ray says: I'd like to know, are you ready for some Super Dynamite Soul!?
