Notes
This grouping gathers the widely divergent array of variations and formats of Queen's phenomenally-successful first "Greatest Hits" album, originally released in the UK on 26 October 1981. It is available on LP, cassette, 8-track, Reel-to-Reel, and of course, it was later re-issued on CD (1984 onwards) and MiniDisc (1998), some in typical remastered fashion (eg. the 2011 remaster).
'Greatest Hits' was an instant success, peaking at number one on the UK Album Chart for four weeks. It has spent over 700 weeks in the UK Charts, and is the best-selling album of all time in the UK, selling over 6 million copies there. It is certified 8 x Platinum in the United States, and is Queen's most commercially successful album worldwide with over 25 million copies sold, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.
Taking a strict "all killer, no filler" approach to song selection from the 1973 to 1980 period, the original UK version included 17 hits -- as do many other international editions (although some of these feature a bewilderingly different gallery of sleeve art). Later editions, however, begun to include the 1981 hit "Under Pressure" as an 18th track while some international flavours also modified the song selection and sequence in favour of hits particular to those territories.
Simultaneous to the album release were the "Greatest Flix" video assemblage (grouped separately) as well as the "Greatest Pix" book.
Needless to say, there are countless re-issues and bootleg/pirate/copycat versions of each.
Some could be grouped here but BEWARE of totally unrelated items bearing no more than a similar title -- the North American versions from 1992, for instance, share nothing but the title, cover a different career period and belong in their own grouping.

First LP is a 9/10 in sound but the second one needs some hardcore cleaning. -

Mine has a pink vinyl? Anyone knows which version is it ? -
If it was possible. I’d give this pressing 4.5 but it’ll be at 5 for now. I was a bit nervous when I picked up this pressing, considering the issues I had with the Target exclusive version. But I was surprised how much better this version is. Significantly less surface noise, no skips, and very minor popping. Disc one (white) played almost perfect, disc two (red) was a little noisy but nothing that ruined the listening experience. It’s worth a pickup if you don’t already have a serviceable copy, but if you don’t have a copy you’re happy with, I’d think this pressing is worth a try.

My copy side 2 matrix matches a different pressing. Side 1 this pressing. I'm confused.

Edited one month agoI’m disagree with most of these comments. My pressing skips a lot and it’s very annoying. This isn’t pressed very well. Other than that, everything else with this record is fine and the bass is loud. It’s just the skips that ruin this.

Many might disagree, but from the first moment I bought this LP in 1981, I always felt that this album was much more rewarding playing side 2 first and then side 1. The flow is so much better. -
Edited one month agoDoes anyone know if recent batches have improved some of the issues previous reviews have mentioned?
Update: no, the batches are still wonky. First copy had a visible 2 inch scratch (almost like someone at the factory sliced it), second copy wasn’t as bad visually, but there was a skip and loud surface noise on both discs. Music is 5 stars, pressing is 3 stars. Maybe some people are lucky with their copies but I had poor luck with two. The Walmart exclusive red/white has treated me better -

Splendid piece of wax as you would expect from a Japanese pressing. Love the different track listing and impressive soundstage given the length of each side. Definitely beats my NZ pressing. -
Clean pressing but not the best mastering I've heard. Audible distortion at times that comes just bad mastering.

Great copy, clear and quiet pressing, good separation with zero pops or crackles.
