Notes

"Outside The Dream Syndicate" is collaboration record between avant-garde composer Tony Conrad and the krautrock group Faust, it was originally released in 1973 on Caroline Records, 20 years later the compact disk reissue was released, with an extra track "From The Side Of Woman And Mankind" and only in 2016 a vinyl reissue came out. In 1995 the both parties came together for a live performance of "From the Side of Man and Womankind" which resulted in the live record "Live: London Queen Elizabeth Hall 1995".

Whoops! Mine has the A-side sticker on both sides, but fortunately the music is what it should be. Anyone else run into this?

I don't think it says in the info, but one side of the insert has a piece written by Jim O'Rourke about the album, the making of the album, the live performances. This is the most accessible Tony Conrad I've heard... his Slapping Pythagoras make this sound like a rock album, especially on side two, The Side of the Machine, on which Faust would be suppressed no longer, but bring in organ and create, with that screeching violin droning away, an almost psychedelic sound. Side one, The Side of Man and Womankind, has Faust almost following Conrad's instructions to create a steady beat, and play a single note throughout on the bass. The bass eventually finds another note for a bit, then returns. I love both of these artists, and am very happy that this LP has been made available. Gorgeous cover too.

Essential music that will take you OUT! This music could move the mountains and change the tides if given a chance. I love letting this music sink in. A masterpiece and a welcome reissue.

My copy has a yellow-tinted jewel case. Should I consider this as a separate version? All the other details look the same.

I've got a brilliant promo copy of this which has disparaging comments made by the original recipient scrawled right across the sleeve.
Anyway - great album. I like what Julian Cope said about this album - something to the effect that out of all musicians it was only Sky Saxon and Tony Conrad who were so committed to repeating themselves an infinite number of times in the hope of finding musical perfection and therefore the secret of the universe.
The grooves on this record are unbelievably rigid and unrelenting, grinding remorselessly for 20 minutes at a time. Tony Conrad's violin is a high scream.... it rarely lets up for the durartion of the tracks.
The thing about this record is - you have to give it time, it's no good dismissing it after 5 minutes. If you don't understand it the first time you must persevere.... on and on... until you 'get it'.
On the other hand - I played it to my girlfriend and she was delighted. And so far as repetition is concerned - she found it full of variation and interest. Mind you - she is one in a million.
