Edited 2 months agoThere's no denying Kane is one of the fiercest rappers of the second generation that came thru from the mid 1980s, with some certified classic singles in his his back catalogue. However this consistency didn't always translate well into an album format. Hip Hop was plagued by trends of Hip House & Rap Ballads during the late 1980s that often ended up as filler on albums much to the chagrin of Hardcore rap fans who considered it selling out.
The classics here are 'Another Victory', 'Warm It Up Kane', 'Lean On Me (Rap Summary)' & 'Wrath Of Kane (Live)' with some solid but not classic tracks 'Mortal Combat', 'Young Gifted & Black' & 'Calling Mr Welfare' with the rest being weaker filler tracks that often plagued some big rap names of the era such as Run DMC, LL Cool J, Stetsasonic, EPMD, etc.
Big Daddy Kane released four albums between 1988 to 1991 in quick succession during his peak, no doubt the record label wanted to cash in, but outside of his classic debut album 'Long Live The Kane' subsequent albums are patchy as he tried to play the line between Hardcore Hip Hop & the smooth ladies man looking for crossover appeal as he moved into RnB. -
Edited 3 years agoGenuine for ‘89...
A great record. Kane is killer on the mic - it’s easy to hear why he was so respected an MC. The samples are never less than interesting and often on point (production also strong, with the man Prince Paul stepping in on a few cuts). Slick, on point, humorous - crazy entertaining! Ranks alongside BDP, EPMD, Biz, Public Enemy and Stetsasonic as essential Hip Hop from the late ‘80s. Peace!
