Notes
The song was originally written by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons and was featured in the Charlie Chaplin movie "Modern Times" (1936) as an instrumental theme.
It was later made popular by Nat King with lyrics supposedly written by Chaplin.
The cover of the Michael Jackson single is a recreation of a shot from another Chaplin film "The Kid" (1921).
Never released because the single was cancelled at the last minute. All of the pressings of "Smile" (both CD maxi-singles and 12" records) were withdrawn and destroyed just days before the release date, save a few that managed to escape, making this one of the all-time rarest items in the MJ discography. Track 4 is exclusive to the 5-track CD maxi-single, and its track time is incorrectly given as 4:50 on sleeve (correct duration is 4:32).
BEWARE:There are several counterfeit cds and vinyls. For the vinyl, pay attention to the sleeve colours, the barcode and, most of all, to the matrix numbers on disc.

I have got this copy in 2014.very special edition
and good sound. -
I'm very sad because i think i bought a fake release, as i can see that you have blocked this release Michael Jackson smile from brazil, from the marketplace, i had bought my Michael smile CD from brazil on Ebay, and i had compares the one i bought on Ebay with that edition on Discogs, and i only noticed what was written in small print on the right side, after i bought my CD on Ebay, to my great disappointment.

It's a shame this was never released as it was Michael's all time favourite song -

I have this CD, I was given 4 copies from a source in California after it was deleted. He had about 30-40 copies of this, and half that in vinyl. In hindsight I wish I would’ve snagged a few of those, but at the time I didn’t have the means to play vinyl. I sold a copy five years ago to a collector in Japan, he flew to the US personally to retrieve it. -

According to information from Hector Barjot (Great MJ collector): "I assure you the Smile was realesed in 97! The maxi 12 was sold in store during 2/3 days".....not 1998! -

Hello! Could you scan the cover and back cover of the single "Smile", by Michael Jackson? Please! I've been looking for these HD images for a long time. -

There are 3 important details that will prove fake from authentic.
1. The "MICHAEL JACKSON SMILE" red text on front should be clear and not pixelated at all, the color is "faded red".
2. The barcode on the back of the sleeve should be CLEAR, and NOT pixelated at all
3. The most important: The label shall have 2 "rings", because the original labels are melted on the disc, the counterfeit has one ring and you can easily see that it is GLUED, not MELTED on. And the text is not crystal clear as a original Epic/Sony label!
BE AWARE!!!!!!!!

re: SAMPCS 4673 As a long-time MJ collector (not a trader) I managed to collect this item in the late 90's. There are now a huge number of fakes in circulation - but I must add that they are brilliant fakes, and I've seen them sell for £30-40. One of the few giveaways is the printing of the IFPI number and the printing of the serial number / matrix etc - usually missed out. If anyone is considering purchasing SAMPCS 4673 I'd urge not to do so over the web and to look at hi-res images of the real thing from an established collector before buying from a trader or a fair. Very happy to provide if you wish to message me. JR -

There is quite some confusion behind the rarity of this cd single, to be honest i am sure only the releases WITH the picture Chaplin sleeves are very hard to find and retracted for sale by the recordcompany. Could it be that Michael thought that picture on the back with the child close next to him was a bit to sensitive releasing this 4 years after some people filed a claim against him for child abuse(?)
The promo's that are selling without the picture sleeves are to my knowledge not deleted by the recordcompany and they are not as rare as some people claim they are. (I have seen stacks of them for sale on cd/ record-fairs! not kidding!) These promo's had a regular distribution like all other promo's had.
