Combining sample-heavy production w/ a carefree vibe, sharp lyricism & a nostalgic sing-along nature that harkens back to the celebratory party jams of an earlier time before cynicism become the prevailing mentality of hip-hop music.
A light-hearted alternative to the harder-edged hip-hop sounds & one of the most appealing hip-hop singles of its time.

I don’t understand why the guest emcees didn’t get credits on this, but Q-Tip, Phife, Dres, Vinia Mojica (singing), B-Nice and Lovey Brown (both of Chosen Few) are on “What Yo Life Can Truly Be”.

I've had this record since the day it came out...actually two copies because I would mix between the different versions in the clubbbbb! Back then, I loved it and was aware of many of the samples used in the various versions, but the 2023 version of me hears this, and all I can think about is how all those samples means De La probably never made a dime off of this tune.

The titles on the back seems to be the ones from this one: https://www.discogs.sitioby.com/release/1293463-De-La-Soul-A-Roller-Skating-Jam-Named-Saturdays-US-Mixes
I too have the misprint (backside sleeve mix-up) the disc itself however shows the four tracks as mentioned in the tracklist. -
Totally agree with the previous review, the A side is pure party vibes, hard not to smile when this ones starts off, with those super catchy breaks, scratch loops and that funky ass sample. 90s is the best dance music era and this is only 1991. Buy on sight

Just hit me that this is 30 years old.... still sounding as fresh as a daisy...(See what i did there?). A special time for our music. The house remixes aren't my thing but all the other versions are nice and fun to play around with on the decks. 10 out of 5...

Edited 4 years agoThe A side here (6.55 min Disco Fever Mix version) is a total winner - one of the best party records I can think of - amazes me that it's not heard significantly more often... The most widely available 7" singles contain a shorter edit (with the well-recognised "It's Saturday, it's Saturdaaaaaaaaay...!") which charted moderately in a few countries in 1991, but the 12" is the version to have.

Fun fact: the sublime David Morales 6:00am Mix was the first track ever played at the Ministry of Sound, London, in September of 1991. Jazzy M was the opening DJ who played it.
