I first heard this in the early 60's shortly after it had won a major prize at the Cannes music festival....It is less of an opera than an acoustic tone poem with some (for its day) incredible sound effects. The basic story follows the adventures of a mortal (Paul) who is loved by the water nymph Ondine...I think from Greek Mythology. The language is Japanese, but vocal parts are as much of the music as they are spoken words. I'm still looking for a copy!
