中聲

Profile:

appears as 中聲 (logo in Chinese)
Taiwan transliteration : [Chung Sheng] Record
Pinyin transliteration is [Zhong Sheng].
Label from Taiwan of doubtful legality. The label catered between others, to US soldiers stationed in Taiwan in the 60's and 70s (but of course Taiwanese citizens bought them too). Covers were often photocopied from Japanese or US issues with altered colors. Many releases are on colored vinyl. Some records appear also to have been pressed in South Vietnam before 1975 for the local market.

The release year can often be determined from a number on the labels. The date format is either YY.MM.DD or YY.MM. Releases are predated 11 years, therefore add 1911 to the written year number for the actual release year. If these numbers are not present, the release date should always be left blank unless stated somewhere else on the release (excluding the original photocopied artwork).

Some people mistakenly call the label "CSJ Records" as they cannot read Chinese; CSJ is not the record label nor the company but is often a part of the 'Chung Sheng Record' catalogue numbers.
Common catalog prefixes of this label are: CSJ, CSL, CS (10 inch).

From what I have gathered and to piggy back off of the profile description, these records were pirated and sold to GI's during the vietnam war. A soldier had the choice of buying the original release for $7-9 at the base or buy these copies for $1-2. These are poorly pressed, terrible copied cover artwork but there is something about these LP's that are alluring and collectable for me. They certainly have a place in history and would make for a fascinating documentary one day.
