It was established as a public limited company (S.A.) on December 3, 1975, and closed on June 11, 2013 to be temporarily replaced by ΔΤ (Δημόσια Τηλεόραση = Public Television), and shortly afterwards by ΝΕΡΙΤ (Νέα Ελληνική Ραδιοφωνία, Ίντερνετ και Τηλεόραση = New Greek Radio, Internet and Television). It reopened on June 11, 2015, exactly two years after the closure with the renaming and change of the statute of the newly established public body.
