When STEREO first came out the vinyl records were red to draw attention to the NEW format. Over at Both Sides Now (site), they mention that sand was added to the vinyl pellets to make it go farther. This resulted in records that were bumpy right out of the new sleeve. It is an interesting read.

Legend has it that this label used to melt down unsold stock of other records, labels and all, to get the vinyl they used for pressing. Hence why their records are always bumpy and sound like garbage - the vinyl is full of bits of paper!
