Capitol Studios, New York City

Profile:

East Coast recording, editing, dubbing and mastering studios for Capitol Records.
Opened in 1953 after Capitol acquired the old Kingston Trio. There were two main studios (A and B) and an announcing booth for radio spots.
Besides their own releases and those on such sublabels as Mainstream Records.
Among the recording engineers were George Marino.
After 1971 or so, Capitol ceased recording operations at their New York studios, which then became mastering only, not only for their custom service and the record club but also such labels as Capitol Mastering in Hollywood).
Identifying Markings on Lacquers
Prior to April 1963, lacquers cut at Capitol's New York studios - whether 33⅓, 45 or 78 RPM, or in mono or stereo - bore a 'N' code within the matrix numbers in the deadwax/runout groove (sample: 45-14643-N2). After April 1963, when new codes were introduced for the label's mastering operations on both coasts, New York mono lacquers would be identified with 'P' (master lathe) or 'T' (slave lathe) codes (for example, on The Beach Boys, from various sundry plants including those of Decca in Gloversville, NY and Pinckneyville, IL; RCA Victor's Rockaway, NJ and Indianapolis, IN plants; MGM Records' Bloomfield, NJ plant; Columbia Records' Pitman, NJ and Terre Haute, IN plants; and even Compo's Cornwall, Ontario (Canada) plant.
After early 1972, the P/T setup (both Scully lathes) was retired and a new Neumann lathe installed whose lacquers were identified by an 'R' code (i.e. ST-2-2108-R13). From late 1973 onwards, lacquers cut at the studio bore the same 'MASTERED BY CAPITOL' stamp that began appearing simultaneously on lacquers cut on the West Coast by EMI America Recording Studios) in Hollywood, and are not to be confused with the 'P' lacquers cut in New York between 1963 and 1971.
