Music Matters started their 45 Blue Note series in December 2007. 1st two titles Art Blakey Big Beat and Horace Parlan Speakin My Piece. They ended 112 titles later in December 2013
with the final two titles. Jazz Messengers at Cafe Bohemia Vol. 1 & 2.Everything after was 33 and whatever they are playing with now. -
I started collecting Music Matters vinyl when I heard great things about their 33 1/3 Blue Note reissues. I started getting into Blue Notes several years prior and I was really excited about finding something comparable, if not superior to original pressings. I bought a few of them and was blown away, which isn't something that happens very often (and almost NEVER with new vinyl reissues). Within the next year, I had every 33 1/3 Blue Note they produced in the first two years! I haven't missed a title since and I don't imagine I will. This is the first time in over 35 years that I being jacked up in anticipation of a new vinyl release, as most of what I have been collecting are 1st pressings (or early ones in most cases) from the country of origin. More luck of the draw because of the substandard equipment they were played on back in the 50's and 60's. People had no idea what they were doing to their records, and believed that they would wear out anyway.
Unless you are somebody who has experienced ana its purest recorded form and your goal is to get as close to what was produced on the master tapes, you might be missing the boat (or have no intention of boarding it in the first place). I am by no means wealthy, but I opt for quality over quantity, and have restored (or had modded) or purchased used, equipment and music that got me closer to the original performance. It's been a great hobby and makes me wonder if I had to make a choice to give up my sight or my hearing, I would probably keep my hearing.
Before I digress into an abyss, let me say that Music Matters and R.R. are second to none, in both quality and service. He is truly a gentleman, and I can't imagine he's doing this to get rich. I have dealt with him and his staff for years, and have never been disappointed by his records, or the way he conducts business. This is a labor of love, and once people realize just how good these pressings are, it will probably be too late. It would make perfect sense that someone who is this ionate about his work probably could give two shits whether or not you buy his product or not, especially if you were somebody who broke his chops and pulled out the "I'm the customer" trump card. He still holds the Ace of Spades and got it the old fashioned way, he earned it!
Nobody asked me to write this, and I have always (and will gladly continue to) paid full price for every title. They just keep getting better and better, and make me happy that I pimped out my AR ES-1 turntable that allows me to appreciate the magic buried in those grooves. Pretty sure it's pictured on my home page.
Need to get of the soapbox before my foot goes through it! -
I own over 50 Music Matters pressings, and they are all magnificent. The pressings are fantastic. The jackets are a joy. And on the rare occasion that there is a problem (I have had several over the years), MM customer service ALWAYS takes care of it. They have always been wonderful about replacements and exchanges, even when it was the postal service's fault. Top class in every way.

Edited 4 years agoTruly awful customer service from this label. You're going to have a much better time ordering from Discogs sellers, as R.R. will go to war with you over every purchase. If the product wasn't so good, I'd say that they don't even want you to buy the records in the first place.

Anyone know if there was a reason behind the order chosen of the remasters? It doesn't look to be from oldest to most recent.. Thanks!
