Lots of people have mentioned that the first few reissues had poor, brickwalled mastering. Can anyone tell me with which release does the quality improve?

I am sad to see both of the American Composer Series albums have been skipped over in this reissue process!

The first couple of albums in this series were brickwalled to the max. All dynamics lost to volume. If you don't hear that, perfect - these are made for you! If you do, however, have an ear for sound, you will find these very tough and tiring to listen to. A serious mistake that fortunately has not (really) continued in the rest of the series. As to the bonus tracks: there are some serious beauties here, which make the series worth buying. Speaking personally: I am not too keen on the later live versions included. I would have preferred recordings from that time-period only. I also have my doubts about the time-period when some of the bonus tracks were recorded - they sound awfully contemporary. Having said that, this is a must-have series for Residents fanatics.

Edited 6 years agoYou're kidding me pilastr....
The first pREServed releases were incredibly brickwalled and harsh. -
These are perfect remasters, none of the brittle highs that so many digital re-masters screw up. Apart from the bonus material (which is fascinating to hear) Colburn's careful work from the original tapes is a revelation that consigns all previous versions to the dustbin of nostalgia. There's no going back, and to think all that we weren't hearing for these many years. Vinyl fetishists be damned, these CDs are must have.
