The Gramophone Co. Ltd. (2)

Profile:

Australian branch of The Gramophone Co. Ltd., England, established in 1925 and often listed as The Gramophone Co. Ltd., Sydney, N.S.W. (please do not confuse with the British mother company)

Record manufacturing operations were initially based at the company's factory in the Sydney suburb of Erskineville in New South Wales.

In 1931 Columbia Graphophone (Aust.) Ltd. and both companies brought together under one istrative control. Record production was centralized at "Columbia's" Homebush factory.

In 1936, the first Australian-made "His Masters Voice" radio receivers were manufactured at Homebush, and the recording of radio transcriptions for broadcasting commenced.

In 1948, the proprietary company E.M.I. (Australia) Pty. Limited was formed to take over the activities of these two branches and became the principal company behind Electric & Musical Industries Ltd.'s Australian operations.
