I've gotten lucky at Goodwill many times recently. Their local price for CDs is approximately $2.50, but their pricing has colored stickers and certain colors are half price on certain days of the week. I bought this yesterday for about $1.25 in pristine condition... Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral

I used to clean a charity shop circa 2007 so used to spot 'donated' items before they went on sale. Managed to get The Congos - Heart Of The Congos with the hand painted sleeve/different mix. I didn't actually know it was worth much at the time. As the shop didn't actually sell music it would have been forwarded to another store. So I took it and put £1 in the charity box, still feel a pang of guilt!

I used to frequent a lot of charity shops back in the day but then they wised up and started to have a copy off Record Collector's RRPG under the counter (This was pre-internet). I was in one shop and spied a copy of A Flock Of Seagulls - Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You) which brought back memories so I duely took it to the old dear behind the counter.
She took it off me, looked at it and started laughing. Next minute she was shouting "Michael Michael come and look at this!" Next second out pops a guy from the back with a cup of tea in his hand. Yep it was Mike Score who was in there visiting his mum. Give him his due he was a good sport about his song ending up there. Even signed it for me. I've gotten lucky at Goodwill many times recently.
The one by my parent's house has been good recently for letting low-interest privates build up recently. No omg super rares, but I've pulled some marginally interesting stuff there over the years.

The flipside is charity shops that think they know what they're doing. Oxfam in my home town were asking £30 for this The Tony Williams Lifetime - Emergency! on the apparent grounds that if the LP is worth that much then the CD must be worth that too.

Charity shops round my way are generally hopeless for anything other than boy band cds and MOR vinyl, Max Bygraves, Mantovani etc. I know for a fact that one particular guy has most of them 'in his pocket'.
But - a while ago I did find about 100 brand new release cds of good quality in one charity shop. They must have come from a reviewer and it was all very interesting stuff. £1 each. Some of it I kept but most of it I sold. That was my one and only good charity find. I never bothered with them in the 80s - that was when the real big scores occurred. You could buy all the avant garde electronic stuff there for pennies. Oh well. -

It definitely happens...
The thing is in the U.S., it's not supposed to happen . I've known a few people who worked at the Goodwill and one of them got in trouble for taking things before they hit the floor.
He also told me that you can report stores where you think they are selling things before they hit the floor.
I also know another guy who hasn't said it, but his house is full of so much stuff, he can't just be digging pieces here and there.
I think he just tells a certain one, he'll take everything. That store almost never has new records and if they are new, they are usually crap.
He has a lot of records, but not a lot of good ones, so I'm not that jealous.
There's some I'd like, but I don't want everything to get them.
The funny thing is, if the stores ever try to charge more than $1 for things, they are usually later pressings of Elvis records, or Beatles records that look like they were dragged across the parking lot first.
Any sort of private, promo, weird lp...still just $1.
One last thing about Goodwill / flea market / thrift store shopping....it was a lot more fun for me before the I phone.
Now every new jack collector or ebay seller can just look stuff up. They have no real knowledge.
So a lot of good stuff disappears quicker. -

Not surprising given their pricing is like the internet hasnt happened.
15 charity shops here in this little town. I get the occasional score - varies between stuff worth selling on and oddities. Or indeed both:
Rajasthan Folk Vol. 2 - Langas And Manganiars
As mentioned above - some of their prices for vinyl are stupid thanks to reading Record Guides too literally. The prices in there are for mint copies for a start.
My two biggest c.shop scores in recent times were a DVD box set of The Brittas Empire (bought for 5, sold for 50) and two Swindon Town FC football/soccer jerseys from the 1990s (bought for £8, sold for a total of £140). -

Biggest overprice I saw was a Jim Reeves 70s Camden re-issue for £20! Don't know where they got that price from as it's not even in the RRPG (original either). My Oxfam has the best records in of quality artists and saleables, but are above the 'normal' charity shop rate. I don't mind if means if I can get a £10 record for £3 or even one that is normally hard to find and online postage makes it more expensive than over the counter.
Another Oxfam further afield takes the piss though, plucking prices out of the either, again thinking they are a record shop and not a charity shop with FREE stock!

Just back from a weekend away at a quaint, Scottish seaside get-away (they do exist). Toured the local places and Oxfam was by far the worst. Good quality artists & albums, but priced in hope rather than any basis in reality Just because its Dark Side of the Moon, does not mean you slap £50 price tag on it. Tried to point out it was in less than Mint condition and was a far later pressing than they thought (and sans any inserts etc..).
Problem is, they are a Charity Shop, and any negotiation sounds like *you* are the one with the problem, not them. There was no room for negotiation and actually a sign on the wall saying as much!! I guess someone must be paying their prices.
Walked away and found the Red Cross shop had a box priced at £1 a pop. Got an Elvis Costello LP and a couple of US pressings of Ella Fitzgerald originals on Verve. -

The Oxfam shop in my town is a good source of CDs and the odd good vinyl. Both are usually prices at 2 euro. My pet hate, though, are the price stickers they put on everything. Best fleamarket find was a Vertigo swirl album which sold for 800 something, forgot which one.
Those are the days :)
Once I walked in a record shop and they had 6 or 7 fresh crates on the floor, packed with mint 80's Electro, Hip Hop and Funk....all 5DM. Heaven !
When they opened WOM mega-chainstore in Cologne (around 1990,91), they had thousands of US 12"es for like 1 to 3DM as opening special. LOTS of Detroit and Chicago. Transmat, KMS, Metroplex, Trax, Warehouse, Marcus Mixx, Armando.....I bought hundreds of those.
Nowadays visiting stores is no longer of big interest for me, as I use to buy big collections regulary.

Everything is priced to sell quickly, the stock turnover keeps funds coming in quicker than holding on to vastly overpriced stuff. And looks like he has the generic sleeve version listed for sale instead of the picture sleeve on top of it all. Haha. Did something happen between the time when all those copies before it sold for $7-$8 this last September? Maybe there was a big news story about all Canadian promo copies of Celine Dion singles being destroyed by Canadian Mounties? What's up with it? Found this promo over the weekend at a Goodwill store for 35 cents. Before there was The Lettermen, there was an unsuccessful R&B group that went by that name. And they weren't in our database yet.

If you check my submissions page, I just added a bunch of stuff from this label: The Children's Record Guild , which I just scored at a thrift... I see Diogenes has added a few of these in his day. This likely coulda went on the "Database Fodder" thread as well. :P ... I still have a good pile to add...
Edit: And they had the covers intact, which is why I even bothered. Great stuff... Unfortunately it didn't include the Raymond Scott one... Raymond Scott Quintet And The Gene Lowell Chorus - By Rocket To The Moon -
