I have the following copy of Modern Music by Be-Bop Deluxe: 23452874.

In the runout of side A, someone (presumably the cutting engineer) has etched in the word "POODLE".

I assume this was done by the cutting engineer, but have no idea if this is his name, a nickname, a private joke, some kind of reference, or something else.

I've tried finding out information about this generally on the internet, but the only reference to this I can find is for this specific album (though apparently it's apparently also on first pressings and promo copies.

Anyone have any insight regarding this?

I understand this already, as I said

What I'm trying to find out is if anyone knows what it means...

Probably a nickname (or in-joke) as you suggested.

There are countless examples of this, the one that always sticks in my mind simply said "BAD JOKES, YOU FOOL" (etched into Pleasure Victim).

Completely nonsensical, unless you read the sleeve credits for the singer...

Right. I can make these assumptions. But to reiterate, I'm asking if someone KNOWS.

The printed credit is "The master was cut by Chris Blair" and being an EMI pressing with in house lacquers it would appear to be a one time alias for him.

    Darned double post

Edit: Might be worthwhile posting in the runouts thread to have this documented.

Don't assume that everything in runouts is a signature or ID for someone or something. I read a piece some years ago in which an engineer (I think it might have been Porky (5), who was famous for amusing or intriguing etchings) said that most times they were things requested by the artist. It quite possibly simply means 'Poodle' and nothing else. Without evidence to the contrary, that is the assumption to make.

Well, to be fair, you asked for insights. And people responded by giving you insights in the nature of these etchings.

As for my own insight: given the fact this is the only (documented) instance of a "poodle" etching, I agree it's much more likely to be a shout-out or in-joke rather than a signature or a credit. It's also very likely Blair made the etching, be it for his own reasons or on behalf of the band.

It's also normal the same etching would appear on the first pressing and promo, since this is not a major album, these could probably all be made from the same master.

On a final note, coincidental or not, Bill Nelson also has a song called Pink Poodle Parade, so maybe it's a Bill Nelson thing.

Yeah I get this, that without actual evidence we only have assumptions. Which is why I'm asking if anyone KNOWS. Not knows about the practice in general. I already know about the practice. I'm asking if anyone KNOWS specifically about this. As in, maybe they worked at the same facility, or knows someone who knows someone who was in the band or was a friend of the cutting engineer or they read something on a trusted forum somewhere that explains it.

Play fair, fella. You didn't initially ask for facts; didn't ask if someone KNOWS. You asked for insight. No need to be quite so down on people offering insight.

someone who knows someone who was in the band

You'd be a lot more likely to find an answer by trying a direct approach. There's an official Facebook group linked on the band's page.

I'm looking forward to Bill Nelson's official representative saying something along the lines of "Oh, the cutting engineer probably did that."

The trouble is that, nearly 50 years later, the cutting engineer has since died, as have two of the band and Bill Nelson tends to distance himself from his output once it is released because he is too busy focusing on his next project.

I didn't say it would be easy, but perhaps more likely to get results than haranguing a bunch of random people on an internet forum.

Yes my first post said insight. My second post said this. It's not a fault not to know. I obviously don't know myself. I'm just asking if anyone does know. There are plenty of vinyl enthusiasts who do a great deal of research, such as Jan Richardson. If you don't know that's fine lol, but if you don't know more than I suggested I know (which is that the inscription was almost certainly done by the cutting engineer and may be an inside joke or nickname or something) then you obviously are very likely to tell me something I don't already know.

It's like, if I said, hey I know that dandelions are yellow, but what else can you tell me about them, and you respond, well I'm pretty sure they're yellow, I don't know how that's helpful...
