Doris Plenn

Real Name:

Doris Troutman Plenn

Profile:

Doris Plenn wrote a fourth verse to the hymn "How Can I Keep from Singing" in the 1950s as a protest to McCarthyism. This added verse popularized the song, and it became adopted by Pete Seeger and other folk artists during the folk revival of the 1960s, using a more secular version of the lyrics.
(The first three verses of the hymn were originally written as a poem by Robert Lowry).
